island hopping

It was rather busy holiday but as a transport lover much appreciation to J&B for organizing, the sunniest Scottish Holiday ever. I remembered that someone told me decades ago "Scotland is very beautiful place if its sunny". 

The 1st day, we arrived to Glasgow by train stayed an airport hotel for our early flight. It was my first trip with Loganair, cute Viking Twin Otter, only for 19 passengers. In a small boarding area, an elderly man was politely checking hand luggage, asking what's inside, if he felt the bag was heavier than 6 kg.  Then he attached cabin bag label one by one.


Tiree is a small island where 653 people live (2011), with lots of sandy beaches and no public transport. Before checking in a hotel, we started walking straight away with excitement. There was a little rain but I love how weather changes in Scotland which makes a dramatic scenery. At the car parking space, a lady was looking for a dog belong to a family meant to leave Tiree that day. By that time we had been seeing posters everywhere we stopped. Then we walked into a Beachcomber Craft Cafe for lunch. There was the same poster at the casher but with a written word "found". What a relief...who can leave an island without their 12 years old dog. J&B went for long hill walk next day. We went short walk to Happy Valley then beach hopping. We stayed at the Scarinish Hotel for 2 nights. Lovely view and restaurant, friendly helpful stuff and an unique self-service breakfast. 

Next stop was the Isle of Coll similar size but smaller population than next door, 195 (2011) almost the same as the number of students in my grade at primary school. The hotel sent a taxi to pick us up at the ferry port then just after checking in we were in the same taxi to being taken to a entrance of hill walk, Ben Hogh. Easy pretty walk and the amazing rocking stone. The island is rockier than Tiree and again no public transport. The next day we hired mountain bikes. I always hesitate hiring a bike as difficult to find my size...but this time problem was not the size but the hilly road and stupid sheep running in front of me when going down hill. We cycled all the roads and main tracks on the island, picnic on Crossapol beach. While "I" swam I collected seaweed. The hotel on Coll again has a good view and food so we had to go for a walk after dinner and saw amazing sky lights.

The last stop was the Isle of Barra, even smaller than the other 2 but more people. There is a bus service yet a little complicated,  although the people are very helpful, finding a taxi was extremely difficult tusk. (We never found one). After 4 hours of ferry trip from Coll we climbed Heabhal just behind our B&B for late afternoon walk. Great view, over looking Castle Bay. The top was quiet and windy only few sheep were around, then J&B and another walker (Later met a farmer with a rather reluctant sheep dog looking for 5 run a way sheep). We took a self guided tour of Kisimul Castle which on a small island in Castle Bay.  It was bought and renovated by an American and then donated to Scottish Heritage. He is now sleeping underneath the castle. Finally made the cafe on Vaterasy, which would close in few days time after busy holiday season, B&B owner informed that us this morning who also closing their business after 30 years. The B&B was lovely, very much at home. We were not offered key or time to close the front door. Yet there was a atmosphere of the ending, things are gradually slowing down. I wonder how the winter season in these islands is? The beaches of Vaterasy  (and cows) were beautiful today and bird watchers were enjoying to see Hen Harrier over the lunch table.

My highlight; Barra Airport. Seeing a small airplane landing on the sandy beach is a great attraction, several people come just to see it. Some buying picnic from the airport cafe or just buy some coffee. A lady asked J "Isn't it scary to fly, is it?" Understand some people does not like to fly...perhaps it sounded funny question to ask to a stranger while waiting the landing for a pleasure. After enjoying our plane finally arriving we walked in to a boarding area and left the island.

夏休み

今年はJ&Bの旅行に便乗してスコットランドの小さな島３つ

電車飛行機フェリーを乗り継いで乗り物好きな私には大満足な１週間。

1日目は電車でグラスゴーに移動　先に到着していたJ&Bに合流してエアポートホテル泊

翌朝 Tiree 行きの飛行機は Viking Twin Otter という１９人乗りの可愛い飛行機

当然ボーディングエリアもこじんまりとしていて

かなりお年をめした男性スタッフが

座っている私たち一人ずつに話しかけながら

機内持ち込み荷物を確認してタグをつけてくれた

私のカバンには果物などいろいろ入っていて

「これは随分と重いね。何を持っているんだい？」

「おやつが入っているのよ」（一人６キロ以内という規定）

「食べ物は大事だね。そのまま持ち込んでいいよ」（フライトは小一時間なんですけどね）

こんな搭乗手続きは初めてですっかり Loganair のファンになってしまう

Tiree は人口６５０人ほどの小さな島。バスとか電車は当然走っていないので

今回はレンタカーを借りてそのまま岩石を愛するB引率のストーンサークルウォーキングへ

地図にPマークはついているもののただの空き地としか見えない駐車場では

（そして島は空き地だらけでその差別化は今到着したばかりの旅行者には難しい）

地元の人が旅行者がなくしてしまった犬を探していた

レンタカー屋さんにもポスターが貼ってあったし

ここ２日間島を挙げての大捜索中の様子

誰も１２歳になる老犬を置いて家には帰れないでしょう

私たちも海岸を歩きつつ白くてふわふわしたものを探してしまう

小さな島にこんなにたくさん砂浜があるなんて不思議な感じ

そして大きな死体も普通に落ちている

遅いお昼に今日で今年の営業を終えるという Beachcomber Craft Cafe に寄ると

レジの横の犬捜索願いのポスターの上にマジックで “Found!”の走り書き

安心してシーズン最後のお客となりました。

2日間滞在した Scarinish Hotel は窓からの風景もご飯も美味しくて

すでに少し食べ過ぎのホリデー前半

次の島はフェリーで１時間ほどでお隣の Isle Of Coll. 

面積的にはTireeと同じくらいながら人口２００人弱とますます空き地が多めな島

ここでもBの強い要望でホテルにチェックインして２分後には連れてきてくれたタクシーに

頂上近くにあるロッキングストーンを見るためにBen Hogh という山の麓へ連れていってもらう

（こういう場所ではタクシーは一度手放したらすぐには見つからないと後日学ぶ）

石にに興味がなくてもプリティなルートはほとんどの人が楽しめる

多分７ー８月はもっと綺麗なはずでホテルは早め予約が必須

（今回の滞在は Coll Hotel レストランもスタッフもとてもナイスでした）

翌日は島内を制覇するためにレンタルバイク

いつもサイズが合うのがなくて苦労するのですが今回の問題は坂道

すっかり自転車筋肉が落ちているところに

くだり坂で人の前を走る羊や

狭い上り坂で反対側からやってくる車

自転車返却した時にはもう普通に歩けず

でもここのビーチはティアリーと比べるとアクセスが難しく

自転車と徒歩というのがちょうど良い

翌日は朝から雨でまたフェリーで少し先の Isle of Barra

初めの二つの島より小さめなものの人口は倍近い　のでバスが走っている

４時間の長旅ながら到着時に雨が上がっているというラッキーなタイミング

迎えにきてくれたB&Bのオーナーは私の父の世代でちょっとびっくり

実際のところこの夏で閉めてしまうという話

最後のお客になることが重なるこの旅行

お茶をいただいてすぐ裏にある Heabhal という山へ

頂上には数頭の羊がウロウロしているのみで

フェリーポートのあるキャッスルベイが全貌できる静かなスポット

ただあまりに風が強いので少し降りたところでピクニックしていると

やる気のなさそうな牧羊犬を連れた農夫が羊を見なかったかと尋ねてきた

これからマーケットに連れて行こうというのに群れから逃走してしまったらしい

Castle Bay には Kisimul Castle という船でしかアクセスできない可愛いお城が建っている

ガイドブックにはRobert Lister というアメリカ国籍の男性が購入して何十年もかけて修復

いまはスコットランドに寄付されていてご本人のお墓がお城のベースメントにあった

何が彼をそこまでさせたのかの理由は見つけられなかったけれど

自分の愛したお城に眠っているは幸せな感じがする

それにしてもバス

よく見ると始発は前日に予約

それ以降は朝の９時までに予約

お城から戻ってきたらすでに１０時

タクシーは全く捕まらない

ツーリストインフォメーションのからお昼の便は誰かが予約しているとの情報を得て

なんとかVaterasy のカフェにたどり着くとJ&Bはすでにお昼を注文していた

朝から歩いてきたらしい　常に歩き続けている二人なのだった

私たちも帰りは歩いて戻ることにする

VaterasyはBarraと道路がつながってはいても別な島

唯一のカフェはあと2日で今年の営業が終わる

翌日の空港行きのバス（こちらは予約なし）は大混雑だった

いくらタクシーに電話しても繋がらないものね当然みんなバスに乗る

到着したのは島の北側楽しみにしていた砂浜に滑走路がある飛行場

ものすごくこじんまりとしている

ランディングを見にきている人も多くてカフェは常に混み合っていて

フィッシュ&チップスを買って砂浜で飛行機見物する人や散歩途中の犬もやってくる

搭乗前にコーヒーを買って自分が乗る飛行機がやってくるの待っているけど

なんといっても１９人乗りの飛行機

ほとんどの人は搭乗券を持っていないはず

Jの隣にいた女性が「飛行機に乘るなんて怖くない？」と何気なく聞いてきた

もちろん飛行機が苦手な人はたくさんいるだろうけど不思議なタイミングの問かけだった

もちろんフライトは快適で眼下の風景を楽しみつつグラスゴーに戻る
